Creek back to normal

The North Chickamauga is back to normal levels after flooding a couple of weeks ago. the water looks greenish from a distance but it is really quite clear if you are looking straight down on it.

Woodpecker

I was taking some pictures near the North Chickamauga Creek today and heard a woodpecker. I looked up and this really pretty red-headed woodpecker was in the tree above my head. I managed to get a picture of it before it flew away. Unfortunately I don't have a telephoto lens but if you click on the picture you can see it much better and see the nice red color.

The weather today in Chattanooga was wonderful. Morning fog burned off and the sun was out and the temperature was a mild 78 degrees F (25 C) with blue skies and sunshine. Then we were treated to this sunset. Enjoy!

Hollywood Canfidential

This limo and red carpet are actually made from cans. School groups competed in Hollywood Canfidential recently. They used food cans to create scenes with a Hollywood theme and then the cans are donated to a local food bank.

Church steeple

I like this scene of the church steeple with the trees as a backdrop and I have been trying to get a decent picture of this for a long time now. It's been difficult for several reasons. First, this is a busy intersection and I can't just stop and take a picture and pulling off the road changes the perspective and it's not so attractive. Also, the large expanse of sky usually makes it difficult to get a decent shot of the steeple and trees. This morning I was upset because I missed the green light and it seems to stay red forever. Then I glanced over and I was finally able to get a shot. It's not the best, but it's better than my other attempts.

Don't know about other parts of the country, but these places are popping up all the time. I guess they provide a service but the interest rates they charge are steep. I imagine if your financial situation is such that you need to use one, then you truly can't afford their interest rates. I do have to say, their building is quite colorful.

My younger son and I went to Zaxby's for supper tonight and I had a grilled chicken sandwich and fries. I took a picture of my meal for several reasons, I always enjoy seeing Rudy's (Antigua DP) food pictures and it has been raining buckets all day here. I thought food a bit more interesting than dreary gray skies and rain. Hope you agree!

I see this memorial everyday on my way to work. I don't know the story behind it but it's been there for at least two years and it has been updated quite often in that time. I know other places around the country have these roadside memorials but do people in other countries put up these roadside memorials?

I saw this at one of the roadside farm stands. I have not eaten boiled peanuts so I can't comment on the taste. I have heard that they are an acquired taste which leads me to believe I probably won't care for them. If you want more information about boiled peanuts I found a great site. Maybe someone out there has eaten them and can comment first hand.

I just wanted to share a couple fall goodies. Apple butter and pumpkin butter. They are both delicious and the best ones are those purchased from local farm stands around Chattanooga. The best way to describe them would be to say they taste like apple and pumpkin pie without the crust. Yummy on toast or english muffins.

Real Estate market

These boxes all have those free real estate magazines. I don't know about other parts of the country, but here in Chattanooga it's a buyers market. Inventory exceeds demand. Last year at this time they were building houses in our area they were being sold before completion. Right now, several new homes are for sale in my neighborhood and have been since spring. There is a brand new subdivision with a paved road underground utilities and cleared lots but no houses. I'm not sure what happened but it's stood empty like that for around 6 months.

Curly of CurlysPhotoshop commented on the size of my pumpkins (yes, I know how that sounds!) so I thought I'd show him what a really big pumpkin looks like. It was used as a display in the supermarket. I don't know if it was also for sale but they had some smaller pumpkins (about half that size) on sale for $25 US dollars.

More pictures from the supermarket grand opening. They had this refurbished Coca Cola delivery truck. Coke was not invented in Chattanooga but the first ever bottling plant for it was right here in this city. They still sell it in those 8 ounce glass bottles.

A sign and a story

The sign is the Shark Shack seafood restaurant sign. The story is that this restaurant opened for business a couple of years ago. I pass by there on my way to work each day. From the outside it's not very appealing but someone told me that the inside was nice and clean. Sometimes the places with the best local food are not very attractive. Has eanyone else ever noticed that?

Anyway, I would pass by this place at lunch time on my way home and within a very short time the parking lot (right in the front) would be overflowing with cars. I thought the food must be really good and even mentioned to my husband we should try it some time. A few months passed and the crowds seemed to grow. Then one night on the local news they had a story about a place that had been raided by the local police. Yes, it was the Shark Shack! It seems that not only was food on the menu but illegal gambling. The police confiscated all sorts of slot machines during their raid.

One of the ironic things is that the sign--which I kind of like--was delivered several days after the raid and the place was closed. They still put up the sign even though the place was closed. The sign is still there and the place has been closed longer than it was open.

Fishing poles and golf clubs

This is a familiar sight on my way to and/or from work. There's an old guy who sells fishing poles and golf clubs from the back of his pickup truck. He sits in his lawn chair and waits for customers. I don't know how much business he does but he's usually there several times a month. So, either he does enough business or he's an eternal optimist. I just think golf clubs and fishing poles are a strange combination.

Are there a lot of fishing golfers? Or golfing fishermen?

Disappearing Act

Sorry for my disappearance but this is why. My 18 year old son who is a freshman in college was rushed to the hospital Friday morning with a fractured skull. I dropped everything and rushed to Nashville (2 hours away) and just got back tonight. As you can see he is on the mend and I have a ton of things to catch up on. I hope to be back to regular posting soon as I get a decent nights sleep.

Moe's Southwest Grill opened this week They're a national chain specializing in burritos and other TexMex food. I love the names they use for their food. Names like the Art Vandalay burrito or the Ugly Nake Guy tacos or Alfredo Garcia fajitas.

This is the ticket booth for the high school football (U.S. football) games. I never really thought much about it before but I guess it's painted to look like a wildcat, the school mascot.

Reflections

I had a picture of the North Chickamauga Creek back on July 21st. That picture was taken from Boy Scout Road as it follows the creek. This picture was taken from Old Lower Mill Road yesterday. I don't know if you can tell from this picture but the creek is significantly lower than it was back in July and it was low at that time. When it is so low, it's hard to imagine that this is the same creek that floods over the road in both places where I snapped the pictures. Anyway, I thought this picture was nice with the water reflecting the trees.

Falling gas prices

I filled up yesterday and paid $2.15 a gallon. This morning when I went by the price had dropped to again! I never know whether to fill up or not. I am always afraid if I wait the price will go up. A few months ago, I would pass by on my way to work in the morning but be in a hurry so I would wait until on my way home to stop and the price would be higher. Now it is just the opposite.

I found this bird's nest in a tree on the property of the church where I work. It's amazing all the things the birds used for this nest. Especially funny is the Easter "grass" they used. Every year the church sponsors an Easter egg hunt for the community children. Plastic eggs are filled with candy and placed around the church grounds sometimes with the fake grass. That must be where the birds came up with the idea!!

Actor Henry Winkler was in Chattanooga on Sunday to give the keynote address at Memorial Hospital's Health Fair at Hamilton Place Mall. Best known for his role as Fonzie in Happy Days, Winkler also signed autographs for fans. He gave a wonderful and often humourous speech about overcoming obstacles in life such as learning disabilities (he is dyslexic) to find the greatness which is in all of us.

Friends of the Library sale

The Friends of the Library hold a book sale at the Northgate Mall each year to raise money. The books are 25 cents, 50 cents, one and two dollars, depending on what they are. They also sell some special sets at higher prices. For book lovers this is wonderful--you never know what you might find. I bought 8 Southern Living magazines--all recent issues-- for only $2.00. A good deal and a good cause.

Indoor sports complex

Chattanooga just opened an indoor sports complex. According to their web site, it's a 31,000 square foot state of the art facility featuring indoor soccer and lacrosse leagues with seats for 200 spectators and synthetic turf. I guess the artificial turf is a given.

Shortcut

This may look like an isolated country road, but it's actually a busy shortcut. The school buses use it to get from the high school to the middle school otherwise they would have to take two sharp turns. I use it because it bypasses the traffic and congestion in front of the middle school. This part of the road is one way but it turns into a two way road farther up and doesn't get any wider!

Sorry for the interruption in service. I spent the weekend taking my oldest son to Middle Tennessee State University. He just started his freshmen year and is living in a dorm. Here's a picture I took of the football stadium where the Blue Raiders play in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Chattanooga Fire Rescue in action

I came upon this scene and as usual snapped a picture as I was driving. And as usual, my teenage son had a fit because I'm always taking pictures--whether or not I'm driving.

Anyway, you can obviously see the fire truck but it you look closely at the white pick up truck (you may have to click on to enlarge the picture) you can see it had caught on fire. No one was injured but it did make a mess of traffic for a while.

WW II Alligator

I have been unable to find out why this WW II tank is park by the side of a small strip mall near my house. It's always been there. It's just another one of the interesting things I came across and never really paid much attention to before I started the DP blog. Now I'm definitely more aware of my surroundings. Ruby Falls

I decided to post a tourist picture today. Ruby Falls is one of Chattanooga's tourist attractions. It's an underground waterfall. Not unique but a fun attraction. We went when we first moved here but have not been recently so I don't have pictures but you can see some on their website.
You take an elevator down to the cave and walk for a bit before you come into the "room" where the waterfall is located.

Gone to the dogs

There are doggy bakeries, groomers and I even had a picture of some doggy strollers. This is a doggy day care. Do they have these in other parts of the country? Or is this unique to Chattanooga? I can't imagine that it would be but you never know.

Road hazards

This isn't the best picture because I was driving and I was trying to stay away from this truck. You may have to click on the picture to see it more clearly but that big red steel ball and hook hanging from the back of this truck was not secured in any way and bouncing back and forth like a pendulum. It would have been comical if not for the danger. Cars were speeding up and/or slowing down to stay out of his way. At first I couldn't understand the reason for the car ballet but when I got closer I saw it and did my best to stay clear.

First Day of School

I took this picture this morning of kids getting on the school bus. Today is the first day of school in Hamilton County. I know this seems early to other parts of the country but some schools in nearby counties and north Georgia have already started.

No, these aren't race cars but they looked like they were ready to race. They're combination baby stroller and shopping cart and you can rent them at the mall.

A sign of autumn

I have been posting summertime pictures recently but this one is a sure sign that autumn is just around the corner. A football game. These are middle school kids playing on Saturday.

Imax Theater

The Imax Theater is located downtown next to the Tennessee Aquarium and you can get a discount by purchasing your tickets together. The last thing I saw at the Imax was a movie about an American fighter pilot and Operation Red Flag exercises. For more info about the Imax you can look here.

I really feel like summer is coming to an end despite the scorching tempatures because the kids are heading off to school in a few days. Here's another picture that's about summer--the ice cream truck and kids lined up to buy the frozen treats.

Summertime and the living is easy

I took this picture at the entrance to one of our grocery stores. I thought it really captured the essence of summer--at least for me. Outdoor seating, tropical plants and watermelons. Lots and lots of watermelons. Unfortunately. the melons this summer haven't been the best. Neither has the corn. They say it's lack of rain.

View from Incline Railway Station

Here's the view of Chattanooga from the Incline Railway Station on top of Lookout Mountain. I'm sorry the picture is so hazy but the air quality this summer has been bad. Like most of the country right not, we are in the midst of a heat wave. The weatherman said today that the temperature has exceeded 95 degrees farenheit (35 celsius) every day for the past 6 days.

I took this picture of the Incline Railway from the station atop Lookout Mountain. It's on its way back down the mountain. In case you're wondering, the workers at the back of the car are greasing the cables. It works on a pulley system. The car traveling down pulls the other car up the hill.

Rooftop bar

The Tortilla Factory is located in downtown Chattanooga and it features a rooftop bar. I haven't eaten there--yet, but I think the rooftop bar looks like fun.

Who is in charge of counting?

Every time I pass by this place I can't help but wonder how they decided upon a name for this store and if anyone ever counted them. If I asked, do you think they would count them for me?

Donation drop off boxes

These boxes are scattered around the city and they can come in handy during a spring cleaning frenzy and I have stuff that's too good to toss into the trash but I don't want it any longer. The items are resold in stores with the money going for charity. Unfortunately, people also use them as a dumpster, tossing unusable trash. They also dump unusable large items outside the box. In some places the boxes had to be removed. I hope the few people who abuse these don't spoil it for the rest of us.

DP Theme Day

Today is DP Theme Day and the theme is a picture of ourselves at one of our favorite places. I'm at Panera Bread, a bakery and retstaurant with wonderful breads, sandwiches and bagels. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor dining and free wireless internet. My favorite for lunch is their chicken salad on semolina bread and my favorite bagel is their wonderful cinnamon crunch bagels.

Vandergriff Park

We have some really nice parks in Chattanooga. This one is called Vandergriff Park and was named after a late commissioner. There's lots of things to do at the park not just for kids but for adults too. There's a covered picnic area and a track. The track--that's where I'm standing to take the picture--goes all around the park. There's two play areas. One is for younger children and one for kids who are a bit older. That makes it safer especially for the younger ones.

Big Mama's

This is another barbecue place in Chattanooga. Most of these places are small take-out ones. A few have picnic tables to sit and eat outside.
